“Unpopular”<\/span> A resource for the church and a message for the World.\u00a0Share with your friends and family.<\/strong>
\nDr. Bruce Bickel <\/strong><\/em>has provided us with a valuable resource to share with our friends who may not yet know Christ as their savior. This link, www.unpopularethemovie.com<\/a>, will take you to a film that Bruce describes as,\u00a0“a clear presentation of biblical Christianity and covers what we have been learning over the years together about the God of biblical revelation not the God of human imagination.\u00a0Grace and Truth,\u00a0Bruce”\u00a0It was produced by some friends of Bruce’s. At the end of the film, “Unpopular” are other links to resources concerning Christianity and our culture.<\/p>\n

Don Maurer complied a detailed presentation about The Bible<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, titled,\u00a0“The Bible, The Book of Books”. \u00a0<\/em>This was the basis of a Sunday School class he lead at his church. \u00a0It was based upon R. C. Sproul’s book, “Now That’s a Good Question.”<\/em> \u00a0Don’s outline incorporates 10 key questions about the Bible and surrounds the Scriptural Foundation, an Introduction, then the 10 Questions that cover, Truth, Transmission and Inspiration of Scripture, Biblical Interpretation, and Translations and the Authority of Scripture. This is a rich resource for the benefit of all us as we learn more about this valuable artifact that God has provided for us, his holy word.<\/p>\n

In our recent\u00a0series on “Christian Liberty” (from April 29, 2016 to January 27, 2017<\/em>) Dr. Bickel taught about the “Fruit of the Spirit”<\/em><\/span><\/strong> in Galatians 5. \u00a0He quoted Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse,\u00a0a gifted preacher and teacher from 10th Presbyterian Church in center city Philadelphia. \u00a0Rev. Barnhouse wrote:
\n“Love is the key.\u00a0<\/em>Joy<\/u> is love singing.\u00a0Peace<\/u> is love resting.\u00a0Long-suffering<\/u> is love enduring.\u00a0Kindness<\/u> is love’s touch.\u00a0Goodness<\/u> is love’s character.\u00a0Faithfulness<\/u> is love’s habit.\u00a0Gentleness<\/u> is love’s self-forgetfulness.\u00a0Self-control <\/u>is love holding the reins.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Meet The Puritans”\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/span>We have added a new resource for all of us to enjoy in our study of God’s word. Many times Dr. Bickel has read from the Puritans that he studied during his pursuit of his Ph.D. This is another website to learn more about the Puritans for our benefit and education. This website is supported by the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals with books, articles and resources “where the dead still speak.”<\/em>\u00a0It is a “voice of Puritan and Reformed Theology.”<\/em> Check it out. \u00a0www.meetthepuritans.org<\/a><\/p>\n

“As the liberal church swung to the extreme of religion without absolutes, the evangelical church flirted with emotionalism without intellect, while some of the mass distributors of spirituality peddled a cosmetic version of truth that was hollow and hairstyles became more important than what was going on in the head itself.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere probably is no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.\u201d Relativism is the open door to fun, absolutes the closed door that destroys fun. That is the way it is seen.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“. . . it moves the debate from what is right to what are one\u2019s rights. Ironically, the political party now most aligned with arguing for rights was once the same party that argued against the emancipation of slaves because of the slave-owners\u2019 \u201crights.\u201d In that case, those rights were overruled by what was right. Interesting that a new word wasn\u2019t coined then to describe those who made moral arguments against the slave-owners\u2019 rights as ‘slaveophobes’.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“. . . it is vacuous to say that if two people love each other they may express it in any way they choose. Love is not defined in a way that is self-referencing. It ultimately hangs on the peg of God\u2019s love and how He defines love.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

“It is the eternal that must guide the temporal.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“For those who follow Jesus Christ, our message to the world must be clear. God transforms the heart and mind and we become his children and his ambassadors. Let us so live that we will never be accused of hate or indifference. But let us also know that compromising the truth is a serious blunder and ends up celebrating that which is not in the will of our Father. This is a painful tension for a believer. To be\u00a0seen as rejecting a belief or a behavior is not the same as rejecting the person. But God helps us to carry that burden.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Now celebrating 25 years of publication, this classic can help you better understand the biblical picture of God\u2019s awesome holiness and why it is so foundational to God-centered, God-honoring theology and Christian living. In “The Holiness of God”<\/em><\/strong>, R.C. Sproul demonstrates that encountering God\u2019s holy presence is a terrifying experience. Dr. Sproul argues that this struggle is nonetheless necessary because it is the only way to cure our propensity to trust in ourselves and our own righteousness for salvation.<\/p>\n

Holiness by J.C. Riles<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0J.C. Ryle was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool and a well read Christian writer. Ryle’s most famous book is “Holiness”<\/em><\/strong> which is considered an inspiration for good Christian living.<\/div>\n

Power of the Blood of Christ<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Dr. Bickel outlined 16 aspects of “the Power of the Blood of Christ” to bring us awe and reverence as we approach the throne of grace. This is an excerpt from Dr. Bickel’s talk on “A Life of Reverence” in our series on Holiness given September 19, 2014 at the Barn.<\/p>\n

Dr. Benjamin E. Mays<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0On Friday March 4, 2016, Bishop Carl Jones read a poem during our Bible Study by Dr. Mays entitled, Just A Minute<\/a>. This link to his poem will also provide you with more background on this brave man.<\/p>\n

2016 The Word Made Flesh: The Ligonier Statement on Christology<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Thanks to a couple of our Brave Men we were able to add this summary on the orthodox doctrine of Christ, presented at this years Ligonier Conference. The concise document fits in with what Dr. Bickel has taught us over the years. It proclaims the Christ of history and Biblical revelation and not our human imagination.\u00a0There is a preface by Dr. R.C. Sproul<\/em><\/strong>, followed by the Ligonier Statement, then the 25 Articles of Affirmation and Denial with Scripture proofs and then wrapped up with an Explanatory Essay with suggestions for use.\u00a0This is a PDF version. We also have a few printed versions available in our Lending Library.<\/p>\n
